FDPL is seeking a friendly, organized, and customer-focused individual to join our team as a Library Assistant II. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with people, has a passion for public service, and thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.  As an LA II you will be responsible for a variety of important tasks that contribute to the smooth daily operations of the library, including circulation, customer service, and program support. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least two (2) years of customer service experience.
  • Ability to pass a background check, physical exam, and drug screen.
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends as scheduled.

Preferred:

  • Associate’s degree or some college coursework.
  • Previous library or public sector experience.

The Friends Book Store sells gently used fiction, general nonfiction, cookbooks, history, biographies, young adult, and children’s books, as well as DVDs, audiobooks on CD, puzzles, and current year magazines. The store also features a selection of newer fiction and nonfiction titles and interesting books on display.  

Gift certificates for those hard-to-buy for friends and relatives are available for purchase.

The store is staffed entirely by volunteers and all proceeds benefit the programs and collections of FDPL.

The Friends Book Store is closed if area schools are closed.

Donation Guidelines

Do you have gently used items you’d like to donate?  The Friends would love to accept them!  Donations can be dropped off at the Book Store any time it’s open.  If you have questions you can call 515-573-8167 ext. 6237.

We accept:

  • Gently used hardcover and paperback books for children, teens, and adults
  • Audiobooks on CD
  • DVDs and music CDs in their original cases
  • Current year magazines
  • Intact/complete puzzles
  • Vintage books in good condition

We do not accept:

  • Damaged items including those that are dirty, musty, moldy, tattered/torn, smell of smoke or mildew
  • Books that are missing pages or are highlighted/have writing in the margins
  • Medical books over 5 years old
  • Computer books over 5 years old
  • Dictionaries, thesauruses over 5 years old
  • Encyclopedias
  • VHS or cassette tapes
  • Textbooks
  • Reader’s Digest or other condensed books
  • Burned CDs or DVDs
  • Workbooks or study guides that are partially or wholly filled in
  • Advanced Reader Copies (ARCs) of books
  • LP records
